Voyant Tools (voyant-tools.org) is a text analysis environment developed by Stéfan Sinclair and Geoffrey Rockwell. Version 2.0 was released in April 2016 to coincide with the publication of Hermeneutica. Voyant allows you to paste in, upload or link to texts or collections of texts and then analyze them using multiple tools (21) in panels that are composed into views. Documentation is available at http://voyant-tools.org/docs/#!/guide .
Voyant has been translated into 9 other languages including Japanese, Arabic, Hebrew, Italian, French and Serbian (http://voyant-tools.org/docs/#!/guide/languages). It is free and open source so you can download and run locally the full version of VoyantServer (https://github.com/sgsinclair/VoyantServer).
In October of 2016 there were 81,686 page views of Voyant from 156 countries that represent 1,173,252 tool invocations just on the main server. VoyantServer 2.0 has in turn been downloaded over 2,000 times. Some of the international servers (other than ours) being run include:
- Huma-Num, a French infrastructure project has set up a French Voyant server as part of their text processing infrastructure (http://www.huma-num.fr/services-et-outils/traiter#texte). The server is at http://voyant.tools.huma-num.fr
- Italian server set up by CNR ILC: http://voyant-tools.ilc.cnr.it/Voyant/?lang=it (note that this is behind a password as it provides access to copyrighted texts.)
- The Canadian Writing Research Collaboratory (CWRC) has hooked Voyant into the Collaboratory. To see it you need an account. (See news of beta launch http://www.cwrc.ca/cwrc_news/cwrc-beta-site-launch/ )
- DARIAH-DE, a German digital humanities infrastructure project, has created a bridge between their TextGrid and Voyant. See DIGIVOY at https://de.dariah.eu/digivoy (in German). You can see an example of a text (Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werther) at https://textgridrep.org/browse/-/browse/11cvr_0 (with a link to send it to DigiVoy.)
